in addition to what mullymyster said-
painful areas often feel slightly warmer or more tense to the touch. sometimes there is even a knot. you really can, a lot of the time, feel that an area is sore with your fingertips. just sort of make sure that you’re really reading the feedback from your fingertips as you’re giving the whole massage- feel the person’s muscles. if you do that well, you’ll be able to feel it when something isn’t right. when you hit a spot that feels sore, ask the client.

well if people have a pain they will usually flinch a small bit but the one that i find easiest to notice would be that when you are checking for pain look at their hand and if you see it clench up or even twich then you most likely have struck a painful area
